Del Mar Race Track
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, "where the turf meets the surf", is a product of Hollywood mixing with horse racing. It was built in 1937 by the legendary crooner, Bing Crosby, along with friends Jimmy Durante and Pat O'Brien. Hollywood soon took notice and stars like Ava Gardner, Dorothy Lamour, and Lucille Ball came to the then-fast-rising Del Mar fairgrounds for photo ops.
Horse racing greats no less than William Lee "Bill" Shoemaker, Johnny Longden, Laffit Pincay, Jr., and more followed suit to grace the turf. In 1938, legendary horse Seabiscuit helped immortalize the Del Mar Racetrack when it won in an epic race against Ligaroti.
Del Mar has two racetracks:
Main Track: One Mile, oval.
Turf Course: Seven eighth's Mile.
