Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California opened in 1934 and is the oldest and most prestigious horse racetrack in Southern California. Founded by the Los Angeles Turf Club, the track's success was built on the Santa Anita Handicap whose $100,000 purse made it the richest race in America.
Santa Anita hugged the headlines in 1940 when Seabiscuit, one of the most popular horses of all time, wins the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap. The victory is Seabiscuit's last race and is one of the biggest sports stories of the year.
